Word limits
Students are required to comply with word and time limits. You are not expected to achieve exactly the required length, and a 10% leeway on either side is acceptable. The marker will not mark beyond the 10%. Only your work to that point will be marked
against the assessment criteria.
Presentation
For written essays and reports and other assessment tasks where formal guidelines are not specifically given in the assignment description (eg, audio recording, pamphlet, newsletter, policy statement, electronic poster, PowerPoint presentation,
journal, text or image construction etc), assignments should comply with the following format:
- a margin of at least 4 cm on the left hand side
- double spaced in 12 point type
- A4 paper
Referencing
You should use the APA style as shown in the UNE Referencing Guide UNE Referencing Guide.
Extensions
Details about what may be considered acceptable or unacceptable grounds for granting extensions are specified in the UNE Assessment Guidelines.
Note: If an extension is obtained for the final assessment, it is unlikely that the work will be returned before the examination period.
A reminder that if you have a Study Access Plan (SAP) lodged with your Unit Coordinator, you will still need to follow the relevant process to apply for an extension. Your SAP substitutes for supporting documentation but not for the application process itself.
An extension of up to 7 calendar days can be granted without supporting documentation (although it may be requested). You need to have a valid reason for requesting the extension. Please see the UNE Assessment Guidelines for details.
Extensions Up to 3 Days
Most units in the School of Health, with the exception of honours and fieldwork units, use the automated extension tool that allows you to self-register for a 3-day extension via the unit Moodle page for most assessments.
Please note, some assessment types are not eligible for use with this tool. Where the automated extension tool is not available please use UNE's extension request form.
Please note the extension tool will grant 3-days from the original assessment due date, not from the date that you register for the extension.
Extensions 4-7 Days
Please use UNE's extension request form. Supporting documentation is not required for extensions less than 7 days, although this may be requested depending upon individual circumstances. You will need to provide a valid reason for requesting the extension.
AskUNE Extension Request Form
Extensions Beyond 7 Days
An extension longer than 7 calendar days may be granted for more serious personal health issues, unexpected work or family commitments or other extenuating circumstances and will require supporting documentation. These assessments must
be applied for through the AskUNE Extension Request Form.
Please note, that should the extension be for beyond the trimester end date, a Special Extension of Time (SET) will be required, that
must be applied for through the appropriate form submitted through AskUNE.
Please see the Principal dates for relevant trimester end date.
Late submission
Please note: As per the UNE Assessment Guidelines, Assessment tasks submitted after the due date and time without an approved extension will incur
a late submission penalty. The following provisions apply:
- A deduction of 5% of the total marks for the assessment task for each calendar day or part day after the due date will be applied. The relevant Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning, considering disciplinary and professional standards, may approve a lower penalty for individual units. The Unit Coordinator will advise students of the lower penalty through the Learning Management System.
- An assessment task received more than ten (10) calendar days after the due date without an approved extension will receive 0% for the task. The relevant Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning, considering disciplinary and professional
standards, may approve an alternative penalty for individual units.
- Where a task is mandatory to submit in order to complete a unit, a task received more than ten (10) calendar days after the due date but within the relevant teaching period will be deemed as having been submitted.
- The Unit Coordinator will inform affected students when late submission penalties are applied.
Special examinations and special consideration
Students who are unable to sit an examination or whose performance in an examination was severely affected, may apply for a Special Examination. Where a student's circumstances do not merit a Special Examination, they may apply for Special
Consideration so that the Unit Coordinator can apply some discretion when marking examination papers.
Applications for Special Examination or Special Consideration must be made directly to the UNE Student Centre and be received
within five (5) working days of the examination date or assessment task due date.
