Taxonomy for ICT Integration

Despite the strong presence of ubiquitous technologies throughout modern society and in the daily lives of our students, a gap exists between these uses of technology and the use of technology for teaching and learning in schools.

Programs like Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and the provision of student notebook computers have been adopted in an attempt to establish digital equity and engage students. Teachers will quickly attest that the introduction of ICT and associated technologies certainly does not provide any guarantee of improved learning and often offer examples of negative consequences. Therefore as educators we need to properly evaluate the effectiveness of technology integration in educational settings.

An important shift from technology being a knowledge source to becoming a knowledge producer is a key aspect often raised by educators. For example the utilisation of data loggers in STEM to collect complex datasets from meaningful and authentic experiments which can then be analysed is seen by some educators as a move in the right direction.

The Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition (SAMR) Model developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura provides a useful taxonomy to examine the integration and effectiveness of technology in educational settings. The model also assists with the evolution classroom pedagogy.
