    • School of Education - Plagiarism and Artificial Intelligence Checklists

Key Aspect - Do you have the information and evidence to demonstrate that your assessment submission was ethically prepared and represents your own work?

      • Can you produce artefacts from your writing process, such as brainstorming notes, drafts, revisions, or reflections? This could include outlines, version histories, or drafts, either handwritten or digital.
      • Do you have copies of all original sources you’ve referenced?
      • Are you able to clearly explain the writing choices you made?
      • Can you discuss how and why you selected each piece of evidence or example?

Ensure you keep copies of your work as you progress, saving each version with unique version numbers (e.g., My_Essay_v001.docx, My_Essay_v002.docx). This approach allows you to easily provide evidence of your writing workflow, if needed.

Additionally, retain a copy of each source you cite and reference. We recommend saving screenshots of web pages and copies of papers, journal articles, and other resources (excluding prescribed textbooks). Collecting these materials in a dedicated folder during your research is good practice and will support your writing process.

Complete the following checklist before submitting your assignment. This will help to ensure that you have avoided plagiarism.

A checklist is an easy way to guide your usage of AI to avoid any appearance of academic misconduct. Points to consider before/during the assignment. The goal is to check off “yes” for most, if not all, of the points. If you checked “no,” consider what steps can be taken to address the issue or complete the task.

    • Academic Integrity (Misconduct and Plagiarism)

Academic integrity is the practice of acting with honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility in learning, teaching and research.

UNE recognises that some breaches of academic integrity may involve mistakes or inexperienced writing, studying or referencing skills, whereas other breaches are more serious. Consequently, UNE has two categories of breaches of academic integrity for determining penalties:

      1. Poor Academic Practice; and
      2. Academic Misconduct.

    • Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and Grammarly Tool Usage Advice

Can I use Grammarly (free or paid) or ChatGPT (or similar AI tools) for my assignments?

In the School of Education, the default answer is NO. These tools include generative AI capabilities, which means that you must obtain written permission from your Unit Coordinator to use Grammarly, ChatGPT, Copilot, Jenni AI, SciSpace or any similar assistance software.

Key Message: Ensure that your Unit Coordinator has explicitly permitted you in writing to use Generative AI (genAI) or other assistance tools (such as grammar checkers) in your unit. This permission should clearly outline how and when these tools may be used.

Important Note: Information about the use of Generative AI and assistive tools must be available for all assessment tasks across the university. If your unit lacks this guidance for any specific assessment task, please contact your Unit Coordinator. If you’re unsatisfied with their response, reach out to the School of Education Academic Integrity Office at academicintegrity@une.edu.au with your Unit Name and Assessment Task. We will review the matter, contact the Unit Coordinator, and work to ensure the information is published.

Dr. Yonis, an entrepreneur offering academic writing services, occasionally emphasizes important caveats to her audience:

      1. Always check what your university allows you to use.
      2. Always ensure you have read the original sources of information.
      3. Take thorough notes throughout your research process (as you may need them - see 6)
      4. Avoid using AI to generate text for assignments.
      5. Do not rely on citations or references provided by AI tools.
      6. Keep clear evidence of your writing process to safeguard against potential academic misconduct allegations.

These are important points – and you should follow this advice to stay safe!
