Mrs Hansen is a 67-year-old woman who had noticed a lump in her left breast when palpating it in the shower.  She had a mammogram 24 months prior, which showed no abnormalities. She is now concerned if this is a cancer. She says she had no discharge or skin changes but now she is worried she needs to have an operation.

She went to her GP who arranged for a mammogram which showed a 2x2cm mass. It was a single dominant lesion with irregular borders and microcalcifications. The GP then referred her on to the Newcastle breast cancer clinic for further assessment.

Mrs Hansen had her first menstrual period at 11 years of age and menopause commenced at 55 years of age. She has two children at 30 and 32 years old and breastfed them both. She has never used any hormone replacement therapy (HRT) but did use the oral contraceptive pill when she was younger.

Mrs Hansen’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at 50 years of age and required a mastectomy.
